Another Cool Day

Temperatures will remain a bit below normal today. Highs will generally top out in the lower 70s. A weak cold front will slip by to our north and there will be a slight chance for a few stray showers over Virginia's Eastern Shore. Hampton Roads should be partly to mostly sunny with more sunshine south into North Carolina.

A strong cold front passed through last night triggering a line of strong storms. That front also ushered in much cooler air. Despite lots of sunshine, highs today will stay close to normal with highs in the lower to mid 70s. Temperatures won't be warming anytime soon.

A Taste of Summer

Temperatures are on the way up today. Highs will climb into the mid 80s thanks to southwest winds blowing 15 to 20 mph. These winds will pick up ahead of a cold front that will slip through tonight. Before the front comes through, a few isolated showers may develop. The atmosphere is pretty dry, so the chances are not great, but we could see a stray storm develop as well.

Despite an east wind today, temperatures will rise as a thermal ridge builds across the region. Highs will be a little above normal, generally close to 80, with lower to mid 80s inland and south. Temperatures may stay in the upper 70s at the beaches and farther north. Expect partly cloudy skies for much of the day with increasing clouds later this afternoon and this evening.

Moisture returns to the region today as a strong area of low pressure is still spinning over the south-central US. That low pressure has produced showers and storms over the deep south for the past several days. Now, that moisture is streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico and finding its way to the mid-Atlantic. Locally, the precipitation will be isolated to scattered and should remain light.

Our soggy weather pattern is over, at least for a while. Temperatures will stay below normal today as the winds blow from the northwest. Highs should generally be in the lower 70s. The winds will shift to the west this evening. Under partly cloudy skies this evening, high school football fans will want to take jackets as the temperatures fall into the mid to upper 60s.

A coastal low producing strong northeast to north winds between 15 and 25 mph (with higher gusts) will keep tides 1 to 2 feet above normal levels. Minor coastal flooding will be possible at high tide today. High tide for Norfolk at Sewells Point occurs at 1:38 PM. The system will also throw a few isolated to scattered showers at the area. Temperatures today will be below normal, generally topping out in the lower to mid 70s.

The coastal low that dumped the steady, heavy rains over Hampton Roads yesterday is now spinning farther northeast with a lesser impact on our region. Drier air was drawn in overnight and that bright thing spotted in the sky this morning was the sun! Later this afternoon we should find variably cloudy skies with a chance of a stray shower. Highs today will be in the mid 70s with slightly warmer conditions inland and south.

Steady, moderate to heavy rain fell this morning over Hampton Roads. So steady and heavy, that the National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch and Flood Advisories for much of the metro area. The rain will continue but become more showery and scattered later today. Low pressure spinning off the North Carolina coast is drawing moisture into the area.
