July 2009 ArchivesHeat and high humidity combined with a weak trough of low pressure to produce severe storms yesterday. Today we still have plenty of heat and a weak trough, but the humidity is expected to be a little lower in the mid levels of the atmosphere. We should have a lower risk of wet weather. I do think there will still be a few isolated showers or storms across the region, but they should be fewer and farther apart. ...After one of the most comfortable early and mid July's in recent history, the heat has returned in a big way. We have had 4 straight days with highs in the lower to mid 90s and it looks like we are in for more. Highs today through Friday are expected to top out in the lower 90s. As we get into the weekend, temperatures are expected to drop off a bit with highs "only" reaching the mid to upper 80s. ...This stagnant weather pattern continues, and more steamy weather can be expected through the next six or seven days. High temperatures may vary by a degree or two from day to day, but little else will change. We are on the warm, humid side of a stationary front that isn't going to move much. Highs today through Friday will be in the lower 90s. Isolated showers or storms will be possible today with the best chances for wet weather in North ... For the next six or seven days we will face the opportunities for isolated to scattered showers and storms. Temperatures will be close to or slightly above normal through Friday. With abundant humidity and warm temperatures across the region, showers and storms will be popping up. ...Which means more heat, the kind that may have you thinking of heading to the beach. But if so, there's something you need to know... ...So far this summer, temperatures have averaged several degrees below normal. But an approaching cold front will allow winds to increase from the south ahead of it, pushing highs on Sunday into the mid 90s. ...And this time it's going to stick around. ...A weak cold front across the region today will bring a temporary wind shift to the northwest. The front will stall and decay, and then the winds will return to the south and the southwest. The result will be a hot weekend. After highs today in the upper 80s, weekend highs should reach the lower 90s. We will also have a shot at an isolated shower or storm. ...Rain was widespread before sunrise this morning. As a coastal low passes just to our east there will be opportunities for stray showers or storms later today as well. To our west, an approaching frontal boundary will also provide "lift" in the atmosphere and should contribute to the threat of isolated to scattered showers or storms through tomorrow. ...Most of the region will enjoy a short break from stormy weather today. There is a low risk of a stray shower or storm, but generally today's weather will be partly sunny with highs in the mid 80s. It looks like drier air will try to build across the region, so more sunshine should be in the mix. A few isolated showers or a storm will be possible this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow. A stationary front has stalled over northeast North Carolina and moisture overriding the front will likely produce hit and miss showers and storms. Hampton Roads now sits on the cool side of the frontal boundary and temperatures today and tomorrow will top out in the lower 80s. ...Keep those umbrellas handy, Hampton Roads is about to get back into a wetter weather pattern. A stalled front along the East Coast will bring below normal temperatures and several chances of rain through the week. ...Let's enjoy it, since we'll be dealing with showers and storms again this week. ...It was rough on Friday, but things are looking better for the weekend. ...Severe weather rocked Hampton Roads Friday afternoon. We could see a few more storms Saturday. As I submit this update, there looks to be about a 30 percent shot at isolated to scattered showers or storms. Check out the radar if your plans take you outdoors. Highs Saturday will be in the upper 80s. ...Southwest winds will keep temperatures near normal Friday and Saturday with highs in the upper 80s. After a cold front crosses the region early Sunday, the temperatures will drop a few degrees and highs should max out in the lower to mid 80s into early next week. The high temperature will be very close the normal high of 87°. As the ridge slides eastward, our winds will increase from the southeast and eventually the south tonight and tomorrow. The result will be a hot day tomorrow and increasing humidity. ...Light winds and mainly clear skies allowed areas of fog to develop early this morning. Today we will enjoy a good amount of sunshine as dry air builds across the region. The dry airmass will support mainly clear skies tonight and mostly sunny skies tomorrow. Temperatures will be a bit on the cool side of normal topping out in the lower to mid 80s this afternoon. ...A warm and muggy start to the day combining with a cold front over the region may touch off isolated showers or storms later this afternoon. Once the risk passes and the front settles farther south tomorrow, we will enjoy cooler and less humid conditions. Highs today will generally top out in the mid to upper 80s. ...After a calm and relatively cool stretch, things are changing... ...Expect plenty of sunshine for the early part of the weekend. Winds will shift to the south Saturday driving high temperatures closer to normal, generally in the mid to upper 80s. Sunday will be warmer, close to 90°, with lower 90s inland. Tomorrow will be a lot like today. ...The sun finally broke through the clouds Monday afternoon before sunset, and we should see a few sunny days before the clouds roll back in. ...What comes after morning showers? Afternoon clearing. Skies should become partly sunny with clearing from the north and west this afternoon. Clouds and showers may linger over North Carolina. Highs today should reach the lower 80s. Tonight clearing will continue and we will likely enjoy several days with near normal temperatures and partly to mostly sunny skies. ...The Independence Day weekend ended on a wet note, and the new workweek will start out with a few showers. ...Saturday night was perfect for most of the 4th of July celebrations and fireworks displays. Now "Mother Nature" may provide a few fireworks of her own. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible Sunday and likely by Sunday evening. Temperatures will be a bit cooler Sunday, maxing out near 80°. ...As we celebrate our country's independence this weekend, you can expect changes in the weather. Mostly to partly sunny skies and seasonable temperatures will be the story Saturday. Isolated to scattered showers and storms are likely Sunday. ...Such a great event--and the weather will cooperate... ...Friday will be more comfortable with a high temperature in the lower to mid 80s. Skies will be partly cloudy early with a slight chance of a shower, then clearing. As we head into the weekend Friday night, skies should be mostly clear and Saturday looks to be mostly sunny as well. Temperatures Saturday will climb back in the mid to upper 80s. ...But the weather will be much calmer during the day on Thursday. ...Wednesday was a scorcher. The hot weather helped set off a few isolated storms during the evening and we may not be done yet. Thursday will be another very warm day with highs climbing to near 90°. It will be partly to mostly sunny for most of the day, but heat, a slight increase in humidity, and a weak front may produce a stray shower or storm, especially during the afternoon ... |
