More Sunshine, But a Shot at Storms

11:36 PM Tue, Jun 30, 2009 |

We should squeeze out another fairly pleasant day Wednesday, but the chances for isolated showers or storms will increase by late afternoon or early evening. Temperatures will continue to be a bit on the warm side, topping out around 90°. Skies will be mostly sunny early and become partly cloudy late.

Lower Humidity Takes the Edge Off Heat

11:00 PM Mon, Jun 29, 2009 |

High temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s are a lot easier to deal with when the humidity is lower. That was evident Monday and will be the case Tuesday as our mainly clear weather pattern continues. It will be slightly warmer Tuesday with highs in the lower to mid 90s across the region. Humidity will build later Wednesday and into Thursday we will find the chances for isolated storms increasing.

Hot Today, but Some Relief on the Way

8:08 AM Fri, Jun 26, 2009 |

Southwest winds blowing 5 to 10 miles per hour will drive temperatures into the lower to mid 90s this afternoon. With the heating comes the risk of stray showers or storms. The better chances for showers or storms will occur late tonight as a cold front slips through the Hampton Roads.

Feeling Hot Hot Hot!

7:44 AM Thu, Jun 25, 2009 |

High temperatures today will be above normal for the first time in four days. A sea breeze should keep afternoon highs in the upper 80s along the coast. Inland areas should be in the lower to mid 90s. The heat won't let up significantly anytime soon. Highs tomorrow will reach the lower to mid 90s for most areas.

Typical Temps Today... Steamy Tomorrow

6:59 AM Wed, Jun 24, 2009 |

The normal high this time of year is 85°. We will be pretty close to that today, maybe a degree or two cooler. Changes are coming. Highs for the following six days will be near or above normal. Over that period, some parts of the region could find highs in the lower to mid 90s.

Minor Coastal Flooding Possible This Evening

7:29 AM Tue, Jun 23, 2009 |

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect this evening through 1 AM Wednesday. North winds are combining with high astronomical tides to bring a threat of minor tidal flooding to the coast and lower Chesapeake Bay. It will be partly sunny with a slight chance of a shower or storm today. Temperatures continue to run a bit below normal, topping out around 80°. Enjoy the relatively cool weather now, the heat will soon return.

Enjoy the Break From the Heat

6:31 AM Mon, Jun 22, 2009 |

For the next three days our weather will be relatively pleasant. We will see a slight chance for a stray shower this afternoon or overnight tonight, but generally skies will be partly cloudy. North winds will blow for the next couple of days and temperatures will stay near normal in the lower 80s for most areas. Changes are coming later in the week.

Near-Normal Temperatures to Start the Week

10:03 PM Sun, Jun 21, 2009 |

An unusually strong area of low pressure off the East Coast will dominate the weather for the next few days. This will bring a mix of clouds and sun, near-normal temperatures, and a slight chance of a shower through mid-week.

A delayed start to summer

5:44 PM Wed, Jun 17, 2009 |

A few weeks ago I wrote about how the 3 months (or 91 days) with the hottest average temperatures each year typically occur from June 1st through August 31st. I say typically because this year for example things have gone according to "normal". That is about to change however.

Carbon Copy

One More Hot Day, Then Some Relief

9:02 AM Fri, Jun 12, 2009 |

A cold front is poised to sweep across the area tonight and a cooler more comfortable weekend is in store. Today, ahead of the front we find another hot and humid day with more isolated to scattered showers and storms developing during the afternoon and into the evening. Some of the storms may become strong, possibly severe, especially in west and in North Carolina. Winds will blow from the southwest and highs will be close to 89°.

...

Subtle differences

12:07 AM Fri, Jun 12, 2009 |

Today was an interesting day weatherwise, especially during the afternoon and evening. First a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for parts of the area but instead of severe storms we saw a line of activity that was working it's way toward us weaken and then completely die out.

More Heat, More Isolated Storms

7:14 AM Thu, Jun 11, 2009 |

Temperatures are warming up today. In fact, highs today and tomorrow will be well above normal, reaching the upper 80s to near 90°. Heat and humidity will combine to produce isolated to scattered showers and storms across the region. The best chances for stronger storms will be over central and western Virginia, but a few could drift across Hampton Roads later this afternoon or this evening.

...

Here come more storms

3:59 PM Wed, Jun 10, 2009 |

We may have gotten a break from the storms today but don't expect it to last. In fact, by tonight the chance of a shower or a storm will return. Then for the next two days we will be back to having a high risk of isolated or scattered, mainly afternoon storms. Right now we are watching some storms forming in West Virginia that are diving rapidly southeast. Because they will arrive later tonight after the hottest part of the day the odds will g...

A Bit of a Break Today

7:13 AM Wed, Jun 10, 2009 |

Not as hot, not as stormy... today's weather will please most of us in Hampton Roads. While temperatures will remain on the high side of normal, generally reaching the lower to mid 80s, humidity will be slightly lower. Stray afternoon storms are still possible, but not very likely. NE/E winds will provide additional relief from the heat at the coast.

Storms Return to Hampton Roads

7:28 AM Tue, Jun 09, 2009 |

For the next few days warmer air will visit our region. Highs today through Thursday will range in the mid to upper 80s, and it will be a bit warmer inland. We also have the opportunity for isolated showers or storms this afternoon.

...

Summerlike Temperatures Are Back

8:51 AM Mon, Jun 08, 2009 |

Highs today will climb into the mid 80s across the region as a warm front lifts northward. The winds will be fairly light from the south at five to ten miles per hour. You can expect mostly to partly sunny skies today with a low risk of a shower or storm this afternoon or early evening, mainly in North Carolina.

When summer should really occur

5:24 PM Fri, Jun 05, 2009 |

Over the past week we have looked at different ways of considering when summer should start. We talked about the warmest 90 days in terms of the average temperatures for both the air as well as the waters of the Bay and Ocean. We also looked at basing summer (or any season) on the calendar, and the problems associated with that. Today, my solution.

Summer part IV

5:09 PM Thu, Jun 04, 2009 |

Over the past three days we have looked at starting summer based on either the wamest temperatures of the air or water, or on when you will receive the most sunlight and have the best chance of getting tanned or burnt.

Today we go by the calendar. Here is why.

Cooler Weather Arrives, Chances for Showers Continue

8:12 AM Thu, Jun 04, 2009 |

A cold front is passing through and the cooler weather will settle in for a couple days. Temperatures will stay in the 70s. We will still have the opportunity for isolated to scattered showers. As the front slides south, a stray storm could develop this afternoon.

Summer part III

4:44 PM Wed, Jun 03, 2009 |

Over the past 2 days we have looked at basing what constitutes summer on either temperatures or the strength of the sunlight reaching us. Today I want to also talk about temperatures but in a different way. Here is part 3.

More Heat Today, but Relief is Coming

8:26 AM Wed, Jun 03, 2009 |

High temperatures today will climb back into the lower to mid 90s and it will be fairly muggy as well, but you won't have to wait long for a break. A cold front will drop through the region early tomorrow bringing cooler temps and scattered showers.

Summer part II

4:36 PM Tue, Jun 02, 2009 |

Yesterday we took a look at a different way of thinking about summer and how the argument could be made that is should be from early May through early August. Today we look at why it could easily be considered the beginning of June through the end of August. Here is more on that.

Hot and Humid Weather Returns

8:20 AM Tue, Jun 02, 2009 |

The front that cooled us down yesterday has slipped eastward this morning and the winds have shifted back to the southwest. Those winds will bring much warmer and more humid conditions to Hampton Roads today and tomorrow.

What makes summer summer?

4:25 PM Mon, Jun 01, 2009 |

The other day Julie blogged about the start of summer which gave me an idea for a more in-depth look at what constitutes summer. When I think about summer I can think of 4 reasons upon which one could argue for summer to based upon. Every day this week I will look at a different reason, and then on Friday I will summarize the four. So, here is part one.

Today's Weather: Fantastic, but Short Lived

7:32 AM Mon, Jun 01, 2009 |

A cold front slipped through Hampton Roads early this morning and the result is a gorgeous day with highs in the upper 70s, lower humidity, and plenty of sunshine. Winds today will blow from the northeast and shift to the east/southeast by evening. Soak it up today because the cooler weather will not last.
