May 2009 ArchivesThe calendar says it's still a few week away, but in meteorology world the season starts tomorrow. ...You have probably heard the old saying: "If you don't like the weather in Hampton Roads, stick around for a few days, it will change." Well that will certainly apply to the weather over the next few days, as a series of fronts will give us changeable weather through the work-week. ...It will still be warm, but won't feel nearly as oppressive. ...We can look forward to a slightly cooler and less humid weekend, but it comes at a price. Ahead of the cold front bringing the relief, isolated to scattered showers and storms will be possible. Some of the storms later this afternoon and into the evening could become strong or severe. ...The National Hurricane Center has classified an area of low pressure well east of VA Beach as the first tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season. With the 11 AM update, the maximum winds are 35 mph and the movement was to the northeast at 17 mph. At this time TD#1 is not a direct threat to land. We do have an elevated risk of rip currents this afternoon and the seas may build a bit as well. ...The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st, but we keep an eye to the tropics year round. Right now an area of low pressure is spinning off the coast of the Carolinas and is moving northward at 10-15 mph. This low may become better organized in the next 24-48 hours. ...Our persistent weather pattern won't break today. A fairly humid air mass is still firmly in place over the region. Afternoon high temperatures will continue ranging from the upper 70s near the coast, to lower 80s inland. Skies will be partly cloudy and we will face the threat of isolated to scattered showers or storms this afternoon and evening. ...Memorial Day marks the "unofficial" start of summer and our weather pattern is playing right along. Today and for the rest of the shortened workweek, we will have the opportunity for isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms. ...If you have plans to fire up the grill on Memorial Day, make sure you have an umbrella handy. ...It's not all beaches and barbecues... ...High pressure has been dominating the weather for the past few days, but it's about to lose its grip on Hampton Roads, and that means some rain is on the way. ...I think you'll have plenty of company... ...Here's what you can expect weather-wise... ...Because we have more of it today... ...You can count on more sunshine for Hampton Roads today as high pressure continues to dominate the weather pattern. Thanks to high pressure centered just to our north, winds will be fairly light today and tonight, averaging five to ten miles per hour from the east. But if you like it a bit warmer than the past couple of days, you are in luck! ...File this under the "Bizarre News" tab - but a fire at a Bellevue, Washington home was caused by the family dog's water bowl! Veering winds are winds that over time shift around the compass in a clockwise direction. They are the opposite of backing winds. Why is that important? ...It was a cool and blustery day Monday. After the showers moved out, the sun tried to poke through the clouds, but the chilly northeast wind made it seem more like early Spring than mid to late May. Things will start changing today. ...If you have been hoping for warmer weather then you are in luck. It will be well below normal to start the day on Tuesday but by afternoon with some sunshine things will start to moderate. It will still be below normal but not by as much as it was on Monday. Then toward midweek things finally start to warm up in a more significantly and actually get back above normal with a change in the wind direction. So, just wait a day or so and you will f... More light showers early this morning, but it continues moving eastward and skies will become partly sunny by afternoon. Temperatures will remain cooler today behind the cold front that passed by yesterday. You will also notice stronger winds developing this afternoon. ...After a soggy Sunday, it looks like the sun will reappear over the next few days. ...And it's going to feel quite a bit cooler... ...That's because today is going to be a lot like Friday. ...Over the next three days, there is a lot happening around Hampton Roads. Tim Ried hosts his Celebrity Weekend and the Greekfest is in full swing on Granby street in Norfolk. Obviously, the pressure is on... will we or won't we see rain? The answer is... ...As we finish up the workweek and head into the weekend, we will face opportunities for showers and storms. Initially the chances aren't great, but I believe we will find some action on the radar over the next several days. ...If you are a regular viewer of 13NEWS Daybreak or a listener of 92.9 The Wave, you may have heard me mention that I have recently started surfing (can you say early mid-life crisis?) The waves have been okay, but the big news is that the water temperatures are coming up! ...We had areas of fog develop early this morning but sunshine will rule the day! Temperatures will be a bit on the cool side, but warmer days are coming. ...Isolated to scattered showers will be likely today and into the evening. Our temperatures will actually drop off into the 50s through the afternoon. If you liked the weather we had for Mother's Day, you are in luck. We will see more sunshine tomorrow. ...My gift to all you Moms out there--better weather! ...Trust me, I'm as over the weather pattern as you are. ...We woke up to clearing skies this morning! After more showers and storms rumbled through the area last night, it is nice catching a break for much of today. There will still be a chance of a stray shower or storm this afternoon, especially to the west. ...Our unsettled weather pattern continues. We may see additional strong or severe storms fire-up this afternoon and early evening. ...Once again Hampton Roads is under a tornado watch. This time it is until 9 pm. So far we have seen some strong storms in north central NC with warnings issued for them but no warnings yet for around here. At 3:33 pm however we are seeing our first signs of hail with a storm developing over southern Chesapeake. So, the bottom line is stay tuned for more possible severe weather tonight as a persistent frontal boundry provides the battle ground f... Once again the Storm Prediction Center in Norman OK has us targeted in a region of potential severe weather. This time, the greatest chances will be over the south and west portions of the viewing area. ...Well, it's official: the storm over yesterday that so many of you photographed as a funnel cloud did make it down to the ground as a tornado in parts of Chesapeake. It was a weak F0 twister with a 3 mile long path about 50 yards wide. Luckily it didn't cause a ton of damage. In fact the microburst earlier in the day over Norfolk caused more damage. Meanwhile we had another tornado watch tonight. Here's what you can expect coming up. >> Continue reading: Lots of storms and a tornado We caught a bit of a break early this morning from the isolated to scattered storms we had yesterday afternoon and evening. We will continue to see mostly cloudy skies and it will be cooler today as a cold front has pushed south in to North Carolina, but we are not done with the wet weather yet. ...Scattered thunderstorms caused some damage across the area this afternoon. There were numerous reports of hail and one spot in Norfolk saw a wind gust over 60 mph that knocked down some large trees onto a few homes and cars. There is still a tornado watch for the area until 6 pm but the odds are that that will be cancelled by 5 pm as the threat has greatly diminished. So, what is in store next? Well, let's address that. ...We have a Tornado Watch over Southeastern Virginia until 6PM. Along a stalled front, strong storms may develop this afternoon. These storms may rotate and will be capable of producing tornadoes. ...Wayne and I are helping emcee today's Earth Day celebration in Virginia Beach. ...Perhaps not what you want to hear for a weekend, but at least the forecast is easy to remember--because it doesn't change much. ...If you are like me, you love to hit the sand and play in the surf. It is one of my favorite things about living in Hampton Roads. Last weekend's heat wave made it easy to get down and enjoy the water. This weekend will not be as hot, but still warm enough to leave many of us thinking about "going coastal!" ... |
