April 2009 ArchivesThe backdoor cold front dropped through the area cooling us down significantly yesterday afternoon and evening. It stalled just south of North Carolina, and later today and tonight it will lift back northward. Changes are coming again. ...Summer came early. At least that's how it felt for the past 4 days here in Hampton Roads. Today things are changing. ...I get a lot of questions about relative humidity and very few people really understand it. That is why meteorologists like to consider the dewpoint and not the relative humidity when talking about how much moisture there is in the atmosphere. In fact, yesterday's blog was about dewpoints which is how meteorologists determine whether it is humid or not. So, today let's talk about relative humidity and why it is almost useless for determining mo... Or is it already here. When I came in today one of the first things I did was check the humidity levels because I thought they were supposed to be fairly low and it sure felt hot to me when I was outside just standing around and not even working. When I mentioned it to Evan he said that our boss said the same thing and wanted to know why our forecast of low to average humidty hadn't worked out. The truth of the matter is it did. So, let's talk... Expect more sweltering heat today and tomorrow. Temps on the other side of the country, from the Great Plains westward to the coast are much, much cooler. The dividing line between the hot and the cold air will be a focus for more strong storms this afternoon. ...Well, if you liked yesterday, you'll love today. ...To "Hello Summer"... ...Temps are on the way up as we head through the weekend. Today we will reach the upper 70s over most of the region (even warmer inland!) ...We'll need them this weekend. ...We had some heavy downpours over much of the region early this morning. Later today and possibly this evening we could get a few more hit-or-miss showers. After that, it's so long rain, hello sunshine! ...Light winds and clearing skies allowed temperatures to settle to the dewpoints across the region early this morning. The result was dense fog for many area shortly after sunrise. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma will be monitoring our area closely today. That is because we have a chance at strong or severe weather later this afternoon and into the evening. You knew it couldn't last... To everyone who's been asking when spring is going to be here and stick around.... ...These are the days it's good to be a meteorologist... ...I've really learned the past few days how displeased people are with the weather so far this spring.... ...Temperatures are warming into the upper 60s to lower 70s and stronger storms have developed over southern North Carolina. Storms will be likely over the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but they will be possible across Hampton Roads as well. Scattered areas of rain are likely for much of the region this afternoon and tonight. We will keep you updated as needed online and on 13News and LNC5. After services Easter Sunday, I took my family to Busch Gardens for the first time this year. The park looks great and the new Sesame Street area is a great addition for little kids. The thing I really noticed was how differently people were dressed to deal with the temperatures in the mid-upper 50s. ...I'm happy to relay good weather news... ...We have chances for storms overnight across the region. Some of the strongest storms may be just to the west and north, but trust that Jeff Lawson will be in tonight watching the high-definition Weatherlab radar for storm development anywhere over the region. With the afternoon forecast guidance now in, it appears we will have a pretty good shot at storms so stay tuned to 13News and watch Jeff's video blog for more updates tonight. ...Today's weather was well handled by the Weatherlab forecast guidance. Our models were indicating showers around sunrise exiting quickly and so far so good. Here's what else we are calling for... ...Remember where the umbrella is? You may need it tomorrow.... ...The first game of the 2009 Major League Baseball season was played last night between the Braves and Phillies. Today, ballparks around the country will be firing up the grills and tapping kegs for fans welcoming back the "boys of summer." The only problem for some of the home-openers... the weather! ...Then some big changes this week... ...In a word: gorgeous... ...That best describes today's weather. Will it be a factor in the big baseball game today? ...April showers bring May flowers. No surprises, it is Spring and during this season we can expect periods of showers. We'll have our opportunities over the next few days. ... |
