Why it matters how fast precip falls

3:47 PM Mon, Jan 26, 2009 |

As Evan and Craig have both written about in the last day or so, there has been a lot of dry air around that has prevented much of the light moisture that has been trying to fall from readhing the ground. That is about to change but not significantly.

...

Dry Air at Low Levels... Little Precip!

8:11 AM Mon, Jan 26, 2009 |

Despite the radar showing areas of rain and snow at the mid-levels of the atmosphere, low levels are still dry enough prevent significant precipitation. Skies have been reported mostly cloudy overnight and this morning with an occasional stray flurry or sprinkle.

10:00 PM Sun, Jan 25, 2009 |

Coming back from dinner, the radar was lit up with greens, pinks, and blues! But most of the precipitation isn't making it down to the ground.

Here we go again?

5:50 PM Sat, Jan 24, 2009 |

I am beginning to hate Tuesdays almost as much as I hate Mondays. But, there COULD be some winter weather in the forecast this upcoming week. I know, it seems like we have been down this road before, and NOTHING is ever set in stone it seems until the event happens, but here is the current thinking...

At Last... A Thawing Period!

7:40 AM Wed, Jan 21, 2009 |

A Winter Storm Watch was posted early this morning through midnight Tuesday night for southside Hampton Roads and the North Carolina portion of our viewing area.

Lows Friday morning and Saturday morning are expected to be in the mid-upper teens. Factor in winds from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph through Friday morning and wind chills could dip into the single digits.

Yes, it's cold--and only going to get colder

9:16 AM Thu, Jan 15, 2009 |

It's also very dry, which gets me to thinking about dew points this time of year.

Hole-Punch Clouds

10:38 AM Tue, Jan 13, 2009 |

I got an email from a viewer last week who saw a strange phenomenon in the sky in Virginia Beach. Here is how she described it:

Yesterday, around 9AM, my husband and I were traveling south on first colonial rd. near the blvd. and I noticed a very strange cloud formation. It appeared as if someone had punched round holes in the edge of the cloud cover and wispy clouds were coming down from the clear center. We could see at ...

Keep the umbrella handy

7:44 PM Mon, Jan 05, 2009 |

Over the next few days we will have a significant amount of rain. It won't rain the entire time but there should be about an inch in some spots. Interestingly enough, we ended up 2008 with almost normal amounts of precipitation despite being way below normal for much of the year.
