January 2009 ArchivesRemember the movie "Groundhog Day?" Here it is, another weekend, another storm possible on Tuesday, and I feel like I have done this all before. Continue reading for the details... ...So how did we fare the first month of 2009? ...What a day we had Wednesday! Mixed precipitation just north or our viewing area early... widespread dense fog through midday... afternoon highs near 70... showers and a few flashes of lightning last evening. It was a day with a little something for everyone. ...We are in for a pretty interesting day weather-wise. We started the morning with widespread fog. At one time or another, visibilities were below a mile in most areas. Temperatures will soar into the upper 60s this afternoon. ...The roller coaster ride of temperatures that we had a few weeks ago is about to be set into motion again. The ups and downs might not be as frequent this time as the last go round but it will be dramatic. ...As Evan and Craig have both written about in the last day or so, there has been a lot of dry air around that has prevented much of the light moisture that has been trying to fall from readhing the ground. That is about to change but not significantly. ...Despite the radar showing areas of rain and snow at the mid-levels of the atmosphere, low levels are still dry enough prevent significant precipitation. Skies have been reported mostly cloudy overnight and this morning with an occasional stray flurry or sprinkle. ...Coming back from dinner, the radar was lit up with greens, pinks, and blues! But most of the precipitation isn't making it down to the ground. ...The possibility for winter weather Tuesday is still up in the air, but it is looking less and less likely. ...I am beginning to hate Tuesdays almost as much as I hate Mondays. But, there COULD be some winter weather in the forecast this upcoming week. I know, it seems like we have been down this road before, and NOTHING is ever set in stone it seems until the event happens, but here is the current thinking... ......days when temperatures fall during during the daytime. ...Because, alas, it's not going to last. ...
Can't let that just slip by... ...Today will be mostly sunny and cold. In fact, with temps well below freezing this morning, black ice has been a big concern in northeast North Carolina where they got the snow yesterday. But the BIG news for the region is the warm-up on the way! ...While we haven't gotten much at all aside from a few flurries in Hampton Roads, viewers in North Carolina are getting the snow. Check out the photos sent in from our viewers from the Tarheel State. ...You have no idea how frustrating the forecasting has been this morning. Many viewers have taken time to share their thoughts about the weather so far today. Forecast conditions left us in a bad spot... ...The big questions this morning at sunrise as businesses and schools close across the region... Where is the snow? Are we really going to see enough to warrant the cancellations? ...Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM EST Precipitation will begin across the warning area as a mix of light rain and snow. ...A Winter Storm Watch was posted early this morning through midnight Tuesday night for southside Hampton Roads and the North Carolina portion of our viewing area. For everyone who has been asking... finally, a good shot at some accumulating snow across the region! This morning we have had very dense for to deal with, but as the day plays out, my attention will turn to a developing low and its impacts on Hampton Roads. ...Finally we catch a break. Will it hold for events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day? ...Several people here at the station are going up for the inauguration. They've asked about the weather, so I figure some of you may be wondering as well... ...It'll happen tonight, but it's still above our all time low... ...Lows Friday morning and Saturday morning are expected to be in the mid-upper teens. Factor in winds from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph through Friday morning and wind chills could dip into the single digits. ...It's also very dry, which gets me to thinking about dew points this time of year. ...I got an email from a viewer last week who saw a strange phenomenon in the sky in Virginia Beach. Here is how she described it: Yesterday, around 9AM, my husband and I were traveling south on first colonial rd. near the blvd. and I noticed a very strange cloud formation. It appeared as if someone had punched round holes in the edge of the cloud cover and wispy clouds were coming down from the clear center. We could see at ... The up and down trend continues, but if you crave consistency it's coming...in the form of much colder conditions. ...We've got one today with the commissioning of a new aircraft carrier at Naval Station Norfolk. A pretty big deal with some of the most powerful people in the world in town... ...We'll flip that phrase around with the chilly but clear weather today. Changes coming for the weekend, though. ...Strong to severe thunderstorms moved through Hampton Roads Wednesday morning. Here is a list of some of the storm reports we received in the 13 News Weather Lab. ...I've got to fess up... I just couldn't stick to my allotted forecast times this morning. The weather was so vastly different from one part of the region to the next, and the conditions were changing greatly throughout 13NEWS Daybreak. ...Light to moderate rain developed earlier this morning and has overspread the region. There were even a few isolated thunderstorms at the onset along the Virginia/North Carolina border. ...Over the next few days we will have a significant amount of rain. It won't rain the entire time but there should be about an inch in some spots. Interestingly enough, we ended up 2008 with almost normal amounts of precipitation despite being way below normal for much of the year. Obviously, late in the year we saw a lot of rain and that made up the difference. Now it looks like 2009 is starting the same way. ... |
