December 2008 ArchivesWindy today and take the heavy coat tonight! ...I had a great time visiting family for Christmas in the midwest. However, they can keep their weather! The first few days, nighttime temperatures fell to the single digits, afternoon temps warmed into the teens. And that's not all... ...I think that best describes our Tuesday weather. ...This was one of our milder holiday weekends! ...A high temperature of 76° was reached today. This tied the old record of 76° set in 1984. But this warm weather is not going to last. ...
The weather in the run up to Christmas was terrible in many parts of the country. Will it be better today? ...We've been all over the place with temperatures the past week---extreme cold alternating with unusual warmth. Which will it be today? ...I was here in the WeatherLab looking at the radar in disbelief. ...It isn't a white Christmas for us this year, but it has happened in the past... ...It sure won't feel like it with the warmer temperatures. ...It seems Old Man Winter is giving snow to areas not used to seeing the "white stuff!" ...It's the end of the year and that means "use it or lose it" when it comes to vacation time at WVEC. Here we go again, with temperatures soaring into the 70s, and then falling once again. ...It's going to be a nice end to the weekend, but we'll have another weird week ahead. ...Okay, it is going to be cold. But the Hampton Holly Days Parade is a good time and all of us in the WeatherLab will be out there with you! ...I'll admit it... I took this blog headline from Dana Carvey's impression of Johnny Carson. But how appropriate is it? Snow in Houston and New Orleans? Overnight temperatures in the upper 60s here in Hampton Roads, in December? ...Yesterday I talked about viewer perceptions and how they relate to the forecast. Today I want to talk about forecast certainties and uncertainties. And, believe it or not they can occur in the same forecast. I'm not taking about days where we might be sure about the expected temperature but uncertain about the amount of rain (or something similar). I'm talking about a difference within the same variable. ...An email we recently received here in the Weather Lab got me thinking about viewers and their perceptions of the forecast. I won't go into the specifics of the email but I will give you a few examples of the kind of comments we occasionally get about our forecasts. ...... but it certainly doesn't feel like it today! ...With temperatures in the upper teens to lower twenties across the region this morning, many folks are ready for a break from the cold. We are going to get it! ...You already know it's going to be windy and cold here locally, so I thought we'd reflect a bit more on how some people are actually still recovering from tropical systems. ...There's no escaping the cold locally, so let's talk about the tropics. ......but if you crave a return to milder conditions there is relief coming--eventually. ......then right back at it. ......but still a bit cool. ...Yesterday's temperatures were a bit mild for this time of year with highs in the lower 60s. We'll be back close to 60 for a high today, but the ride will be up and down over the coming week. ... |
