The Southeast US is currently in one of the worst droughts in recorded history. Because of that, lots of people in the deep south were hoping for a nice soaking rain from Tropical Storm Fay. Well, Fay has brought lots of rain, but not the kind they needed. First of all, Fay has brought over a foot of rain to many areas. The problem is that much of it has fallen across Florida which is dry, but not as dry as parts of Georgia or surrounding states. The second problem is that when heavy rain falls in that short a period of time, much of it runs off and doesn't soak in. 12 inches of rain in 2 days doesn't have nearly the effect on a drought that 12 inches does over 4 days. Granted, some of the ponds, lakes, etc will see nearly the same amount of water accumulate with both scenarios but, in general, much of the water will not be able to soak in and will just runoff into rivers or the ocean which doesn't help a whole lot. So, the rains of the last few days might have done some good, but balanced against the loss of life and property damage there is no comparison. This storm is a killer, not a savior. |
