The smoke is coming back

4:04 PM Fri, Jun 13, 2008 |

Remember last week and the horrible smoke conditions we had one evening?. Well, parts of the area are going to see that again as the wind shifts this weekend.

The good news is that after one day of those conditions the wind will shift back again and blow the smoke at least temporarily out of the area.

The other change from last week is that we now have 2 fires, with a new one in the Dismal Swamp. It is much smaller than the massive fire down near the Albemarle Sound in NC.

The winds today have been from the East and Southeast which has been blowing some smoke back into western parts of the viewing area. Later tonight the winds will continue to shift to the south and, eventually, southwest. More important than the surface wind is the wind direction and speed a couple of thousand feet into the atmosphere.

So, watch for the smoke to begin to shift back into parts of the area overnight, and then continue to shift eastward across metro areas tomorrow. Again, the good news is that on Sunday the winds will shift back to northerly and push everything back into North Carolina.
