Update on the smoky conditions from 13News Meteorologist Evan Stewart. ...Dense Smoke Advisory in effect until 8 PM this evening... Smoke from the wildfire over the Great Dismal Swamp will expand northward into metro Norfolk and far western portions of Virginia Beach this afternoon. Visibilities will be variable, but locally will be reduced to less than one mile at times. People with respiratory ailments should remain indoors due to the widespread smoke. A dense smoke advisory means widespread fires will create smoke, limiting visibilities. If driving, slow down, use your headlights, snd leave plenty of distance ahead of you in case a sudden stop is needed. The wildfires near the VA/NC border across far southern Suffolk and across Tyrrell and Hyde counties will likely burn for several days. Latest computer model runs from both fires suggest the smoke is fairly concentrated with patchy smoke further away from fires. This afternoon, as winds shift to the south, smoke plumes will move northward with return of smoke into the Hampton Roads area and into the southern Chesapeake Bay. A frontal boundary will sag southward tonight into early Tuesday north of the fires. Unfortunately the front stalls out on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning (making wind direction forecast tricky) before pushing out to sea. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |
Which way are the winds blowing? Is it going to get better or worse? Thanks!
I think it has cleared off as of about 3 pm. This morning it was a lot hazier.
I liked the noon graphic which showed both the smoke, and the changing wind direction as the day went on. Will that be a feature as long as this fire continues?
