In Virginia's history we only know of 2 category 4 tornadoes. Today might have been the 3rd. Tornadoes are ranked on something called the Fujita scale. For decades the scale remained unchanged. In early 2007 it was modified slightly and became the enhanced Fujita scale. The bottom line is that almost all tornadoes in Virgnia in an average year are EF 0 or EF 1 twisters. This one wasn't. What struck me as very strange was that even if a weak funnel cloud forms we get tons of emails and calls alerting us to the fact that it is occuring. With this storm we were on for an hour or so talking about tornado warnings but not getting any reports of damage. Even after calling the authorities in the communities where we had seen warnings we were told there were no reports of damage. Then all of a sudden that changed. We started getting multiple reports of damage in Suffolk from a tornado. We didn't know just how bad it was though for another half hour or so until our reporters got on the scene. When they started sending back pictures of the horrific damage we were amazed. Entire houses were flattened down to the slab foundations. Tomorrow we will found out exactly what strength the storm had as it moved through but there is no doubt we had at least one of the 30 strongest tornadoes in Virginia history and it is very possible that we had Virginia's third ever F4 tornado that we know about. Luckily as far as we know there were lots of injuries but no deaths from the storm. Now the cleanup begins. 6 CommentsLeave a comment |

Dear Jeff and Evan,
What a super job you guys did yesterday with so much going on at the same time.
Keep up the GOOD work,
Cathy
Yes the weather is serious, but an update every 15 minutes or so versus over two straight hours of hearing about it. Way over done. Good thing for cable and the many other channels.
Please stop with all the sky is falling sensationalism . I want to watch the regular shows instead of a weather report when it rains .
Yes, weather can be serious, but every 15 minute update or so would be much better that over two hours of hearing about it. A little over done. Good thing for cable offering other channels.
Yes. The base got hit. Lots of damage to vehicles but no injuries or fatalities.
