January 2008 ArchivesOver the past week, I had the opportunity to see two great shows! ...If you look at many decades of statistics, our daily temperatures should be warming up as we go forward the rest of the winter. At least if the averages work out anyway. The coldest our average daily high gets is a 47 degree reading during the 3rd week on January. Our coldest average low is typically 32 and is also at it lowest point around January 18th. ...Remember how it was in the 70s just a couple weeks ago... ...We are still getting reports of a couple of inches of accumulation from the northern and inland areas, and it is still snowing, and will continue for another few hours. But......for the more populated areas like most of Newport News, Hampton, and most of Southside, the hours and hours of snow is not accumulating and I don't see a whole lot sticking later. That will be especially true for the Southside which is just a touch warmer. There will b... Since yesterday I have consistently said that I thought we would get much less snow than everyone else. At one point last night I was saying about 1/2 inch (a dusting) for most of Southside while the "official" forecast was for 3-5 or 3-6". Even today while we stuck with the minor amounts the other forecasts only came down to 2-4". Well, I am starting to wonder if maybe I wasn't even a bit too high with my amounts. ...Bonnie reports that some rain seems to be mixing back in for Norfolk at 7 pm and wonders if that means a change in the forecast. The answer is no. When temperatures are borderline like they still are the lighter precipitation takes longer to fall and therefore has more of a chance to melt. As soon as the intesity picks up even slightly it will be snow again. Also, as temperatures drop tonight it won't matter what intensity occurs because it wi... I love all these reports from everyone. Thanks so much ! As you can all see the snow is starting to stick in most spots although it isn't on the roads yet except in the farthest northern areas. Now for the warning. Temperatures are going to get very cold tonight with readings well down into the 20s. Any snow and slush, along with wet roads, will be freezing. In addition to the snow that freezes that you will be able to see, be aware... We have gotten a few comments from people today wondering where the snow is. I guess you all didn't pay close enough attention, and that we need to give a quiz after each presentation (just kidding of course). It does show you though that not everyone interprets what you say the same. The forecast yesterday was for rain developing today then changing to a mix and becoming wintery by evening. ...Well, things are still looking like snow for parts of the area and rain for others. The rain will primarily be across coastal NC, although at the beginning or the storm many spots will see rain, and near the coast of Virginia it may stay a mix of snow and rain for quite a while after the rain changes over. ...A storm that hasn't even formed yet will affect Hampton Roads this weekend. As low pressure forms in the Gulf of Mexico it will draw moisture up the coastline. With cold air moving in behind a cold front there will be a clash of airmasses and there should be winter weather across the area. ...After a very dry start to 2008 we finally got a nice rain over the region. Norfolk International Airport received .60 inches Thursday and we are looking for additional rain and snow on Saturday. But that's not all... ...Well, because I worked over the Christmas Holiday and then worked New Years Day as well, I took a few days off to have a little getaway with my wife and a few other couples that are friends of ours. We thought we might get some slightly warmer weather where we were heading. We were wrong. Instead, we missed what felt like summertime in Hampton Roads. ... |
