By now you have seen the tornado episode of "Desperate Housewives" and for the first time in a while, I didn't cringe TOO much!
Typically when a television show does an episode concerning a weather event, be it a tornado, hurricane, or what have you, I end up cringing every time. Obviously the writers never bothered to consult a meteorologist for some advice. Perhaps this is because all the writers live in California and have never been through such an event. Earthquakes they know - tornadoes, not so much.
At least with Housewives they got the terminology right. First there was a Tornado Watch, then a Tornado Warning. Granted, they said the watch was extended a few counties to include Wisteria Lane and the residents of Fairview. Minor. Watches are issued hours in advance, and cover large areas, usually the size of a state. But since Fairview is in the fictional Eagle State - I will cut them some slack.
As for the storm itself, I thought the special effects were pretty good. I would have thought there would have been some rain with the storm, but that's not always the case. I think it would have helped to see some wind-blown rain with the tornado - but that is something we see more here in the East with our tornadoes than, say, out in Tornado Alley.
I guess the things that really bugged me were what the residents were doing to prepare. Katherine Mayfair (Dana Delany's character) should not have been wasting time taping up the windows. First, you think of that with a hurricane, not a tornado. Second, it does no good anyway - don't waste your time taping up windows for either a tornado or hurricane. At least we didn't see anyone trying to open the windows to "equalize the pressure" in the house. That's a myth too.
Next, Edie and Gabrielle hiding in the crawl space of her house. Not a smart move. A basement is a safe place to go, or an interior room or closet. Had her house collapsed, like Mrs. McCluskey's did, they would have been killed. (Of course, we don't know what has happened to Tom, the kids, and Ida Greenberg - unless you read the spoilers online.)
Next on the list, the candles. They are a BAD idea in a tornado or hurricane. Had the house shook more or the door blow open, those candles could have set something on fire, making the situation even more dangerous. Always use flashlights and batteries. Yes, I know Sylvia was in the safe room with Bree's supplies - but I find it hard to believe Bree wouldn't have known better than use candles!
Finally, at least Lynette knew what to do - after getting Mrs. McCluskey in the house. They went to a bathroom and put a mattress over the tub. Granted the bathroom had a window, but they were in a much safer place than most anyone else.
So bottom line folks - taping windows, crawlspaces, and candles: BAD. Tubs with a mattress over you: GOOD.
Oh and Marc Cherry - if you are reading this...I am available as a story consultant, when the writers return from strike, for a nominal fee. ;)
