Everybody has them. You know what I'm talking about, things that might seem trivial to others, but that really annoy you. I don't have many of them, but lately I have noticed that one in particular is getting worse. I'm talking about grammar. Now, before I start let me preface this blog with the admission that I am not perfect. Occasionally I dangle a participle or split an infinitive, and I've been known to misplace a comma or two in the written word. What I'm talking about are what I consider serious grammatical errors in either tv or radio. I'm not talking about errors in speaking that are a result of ad libbing or talking in normal conversation. I'll sometimes make those kind of mistakes. Usually, if I am on the air I try to correct myself but not always. These errors are often in advertisements on either tv or radio that should have been caught by a proofreader. It bothers me so much that I often write them down with the intent of writing the company mentioned in the advertisement. So far I haven't done that, but one of these days I probably will. Send me examples that you notice in the next few weeks and I will add them in another blog entry to some of my observations. They can be from advertisements, news reports, or anywhere else you find something you think fits the bill. |
