Where is the October I know and love ?

4:02 PM Thu, Oct 04, 2007 |

Fall is my favorite time of year in Hampton Roads. I don't like summer heat and humidity, and while winter isn't as bad, it isn't always conducive to outdoor activities. That leaves spring and fall as my 2 favorite seasons.

Spring is nice because I like temperatures in the 60s, 70s, and 80s the best. I also like lower humidity so spring and fall both fit the bill there as well. So, why do I choose fall over spring ? Well, for one thing the water temperatures in the Bay and Ocean. In the spring it is too cold to swim, whereas the fall still features water temps that are almost as warm as summer. So, the deciding factor is probably the lack of damp and chilly weather in the fall. During spring you can have a sunny warm day with highs in the 80s and within minutes it can be foggy and 60. That happens whenever the wind shifts to onshore which frequently happens when the land temperature gets significantly higher than the chilly water temperature.

During the fall however the water is still very warm and we don't get that effect. This week is a good example. We have seen many days in a row with an easterly wind. That has meant variably cloudy conditions with just an isolated shower every once in a while. If this were spring we would have been cloudy, foggy and quite chilly for the last week.

So, as the song goes- "that's my story and I'm sticking to it"
