As most of you are already painfully aware, Hampton Roads is in the midst of a serious drought. Not only did we have a dry summer, but so far this fall we haven't seen any tropical systems either like we often do in the fall. But, the forecast is about to turn wetter and here is why. Without getting too technical, the reason for our dry pattern has simply been that the jet stream has been stuck to our west. The jet stream is a fast moving band of winds that steers storms. Think of it like a train track and think of storms like the cars of a train. Low pressure areas (other than tropical systems) can only form and move along a jet stream. With it stuck to our west the storms have stayed to the west and the result has been dry weather here with the midwest seeing much flooding. For a few days at least that is about to change. An almost stationary storm system will slowly drift across the eastern third of the country. How much rain we get will depend on the exact track of the storms that form along that front, but right now it looks like the best chance for a decent rain that we have seen in a long time. So, stay tuned the next few days while we pin down the exact timing and rain chances. 2 CommentsLeave a comment |
I live on Gwynn's Island in Mathews County, VA
We have had over 5 1/2 inches of rain total since Wednesday.
I would enjoy some more rain. I love the rain and this year has been a dry one. Hope we get more soon.
