But the weather will be much calmer during the day on Thursday. ...Wednesday was a scorcher. The hot weather helped set off a few isolated storms during the evening and we may not be done yet. Thursday will be another very warm day with highs climbing to near 90°. It will be partly to mostly sunny for most of the day, but heat, a slight increase in humidity, and a weak front may produce a stray shower or storm, especially during the afternoon ...We should squeeze out another fairly pleasant day Wednesday, but the chances for isolated showers or storms will increase by late afternoon or early evening. Temperatures will continue to be a bit on the warm side, topping out around 90°. Skies will be mostly sunny early and become partly cloudy late. ...After a comfortable start to the day, we'll be in the 90s this afternoon. ...High temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s are a lot easier to deal with when the humidity is lower. That was evident Monday and will be the case Tuesday as our mainly clear weather pattern continues. It will be slightly warmer Tuesday with highs in the lower to mid 90s across the region. Humidity will build later Wednesday and into Thursday we will find the chances for isolated storms increasing. ...Appropriately enough in the run up to July 4th it will definitely feel like summer. ...A good deal of cloud cover during the day on Sunday kept temperatures down, but look for warmer temperatures through the work week. ...Looks like our luck will hold this weekend... ...Southwest winds blowing 5 to 10 miles per hour will drive temperatures into the lower to mid 90s this afternoon. A sea breeze should keep afternoon highs in the upper 80s along the coast. Inland areas should be in the lower to mid 90s. The heat won't let up significantly anytime soon. Highs tomorrow will reach the lower to mid 90s for most areas. ...The normal high this time of year is 85°. We will be pretty close to that today, maybe a degree or two cooler. Changes are coming. Highs for the following six days will be near or above normal. Over that period, some parts of the region could find highs in the lower to mid 90s. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect this evening through 1 AM Wednesday. North winds are combining with high astronomical tides to bring a threat of minor tidal flooding to the coast and lower Chesapeake Bay. It will be partly sunny with a slight chance of a shower or storm today. Temperatures continue to run a bit below normal, topping out around 80°. Enjoy the relatively cool weather now, the heat will soon return. ...For the next three days our weather will be relatively pleasant. We will see a slight chance for a stray shower this afternoon or overnight tonight, but generally skies will be partly cloudy. North winds will blow for the next couple of days and temperatures will stay near normal in the lower 80s for most areas. Changes are coming later in the week. ...An unusually strong area of low pressure off the East Coast will dominate the weather for the next few days. I say typically because this year for example things have gone according to "normal". We talked about the warmest 90 days in terms of the average temperatures for both the air as well as the waters of the Bay and Ocean. We also looked at basing summer (or any season) on the calendar, and the problems associated with that. Today, my solution. ...We need the rain. ...Over the past three days we have looked at starting summer based on either the wamest temperatures of the air or water, or on when you will receive the most sunlight and have the best chance of getting tanned or burnt. Today we go by the calendar. Here is why. ...A cold front is passing through and the cooler weather will settle in for a couple days. Temperatures will stay in the 70s. We will still have the opportunity for isolated to scattered showers. As the front slides south, a stray storm could develop this afternoon. ...Over the past 2 days we have looked at basing what constitutes summer on either temperatures or the strength of the sunlight reaching us. Today I want to also talk about temperatures but in a different way. Here is part 3. ...High temperatures today will climb back into the lower to mid 90s and it will be fairly muggy as well, but you won't have to wait long for a break. When I think about summer I can think of 4 reasons upon which one could argue for summer to based upon. Every day this week I will look at a different reason, and then on Friday I will summarize the four. So, here is part one. ...A cold front slipped through Hampton Roads early this morning and the result is a gorgeous day with highs in the upper 70s, lower humidity, and plenty of sunshine. Winds today will blow from the northeast and shift to the east/southeast by evening. Some of the storms later this afternoon and into the evening could become strong or severe. ...The National Hurricane Center has classified an area of low pressure well east of VA Beach as the first tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season. With the 11 AM update, the maximum winds are 35 mph and the movement was to the northeast at 17 mph. At this time TD#1 is not a direct threat to land. We do have an elevated risk of rip currents this afternoon and the seas may build a bit as well. ...The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st, but we keep an eye to the tropics year round. Right now an area of low pressure is spinning off the coast of the Carolinas and is moving northward at 10-15 mph. This low may become better organized in the next 24-48 hours. ...Our persistent weather pattern won't break today. A fairly humid air mass is still firmly in place over the region. Afternoon high temperatures will continue ranging from the upper 70s near the coast, to lower 80s inland. Skies will be partly cloudy and we will face the threat of isolated to scattered showers or storms this afternoon and evening. ...Memorial Day marks the "unofficial" start of summer and our weather pattern is playing right along. After more showers and storms rumbled through the area last night, it is nice catching a break for much of today. There will still be a chance of a stray shower or storm this afternoon, especially to the west. ...Our unsettled weather pattern continues. We may see additional strong or severe storms fire-up this afternoon and early evening. ...Once again Hampton Roads is under a tornado watch. This time it is until 9 pm. So far we have seen some strong storms in north central NC with warnings issued for them but no warnings yet for around here. At 3:33 pm however we are seeing our first signs of hail with a storm developing over southern Chesapeake. So, the bottom line is stay tuned for more possible severe weather tonight as a persistent frontal boundry provides the battle ground f... Once again the Storm Prediction Center in Norman OK has us targeted in a region of potential severe weather. This time, the greatest chances will be over the south and west portions of the viewing area. ...Well, it's official: the storm over yesterday that so many of you photographed as a funnel cloud did make it down to the ground as a tornado in parts of Chesapeake. It was a weak F0 twister with a 3 mile long path about 50 yards wide. Luckily it didn't cause a ton of damage. In fact the microburst earlier in the day over Norfolk caused more damage. Meanwhile we had another tornado watch tonight. Here's what you can expect coming up. >> Continue reading: Lots of storms and a tornado We caught a bit of a break early this morning from the isolated to scattered storms we had yesterday afternoon and evening. We will continue to see mostly cloudy skies and it will be cooler today as a cold front has pushed south in to North Carolina, but we are not done with the wet weather yet. ...Scattered thunderstorms caused some damage across the area this afternoon. There were numerous reports of hail and one spot in Norfolk saw a wind gust over 60 mph that knocked down some large trees onto a few homes and cars. There is still a tornado watch for the area until 6 pm but the odds are that that will be cancelled by 5 pm as the threat has greatly diminished. So, what is in store next? Well, let's address that. ...We have a Tornado Watch over Southeastern Virginia until 6PM. Along a stalled front, strong storms may develop this afternoon.
