Recently by http://www.wvec.com/blogs/profiles/gooding.jsI miss my brother. And I miss my dog Rigby. And I miss my friends back in Annandale. And I miss Maine. I miss my grandmothers Agnes and Ida and Dorothy (yep, I had three of them). And I miss my old General Assembly days and my Redskins days, but only a little. But here's what I don't miss at all. I don't miss waking up with a pounding head and a lighter wallet. I'm talking of course about some of the poorer choices I made in youn... At 4:40 Monday afternoon, the first best friend I ever had passed on. For those of you who knew him and those who didn't, thanks for all the kind and loving thoughts you've expressed through the months. Rick Gooding went out on his own terms and it was quiet and it was peaceful. ...As a general rule, and I mean her no disrespect, but, I never listen to Kathryn Barrett's stories. In fact, I'm so busy every day just getting my own stories together, I never really much listen to any other reporters. I'm not proud of that, of course, but it's the way it is. In recent days, though, I've come to learn, if there's one person I should've listened to it was Barrett, Hampton Roads' only medical editor. >> Continue reading: On The Mend, Finally When you're 8,000 miles from home, like I am now in Sub-Saharan Africa, some things just seem a little otherworldly. Take the other morning for example... ...For viewers who may be wondering in recent days what's become of me and why I haven't been on the air, there is a reason I've been gone, and it is a good one. I have been reporting out of Africa. Djibouti, East Africa to be precise. Photographer Pierre Simmons and I are gathering stories for WVEC TV's annual "Holiday Salute" show (formerly "Navy Christmas"). ...While on the subject of giving thanks, as last Thursday's holiday prompts one to do, it seems appropriate to pause for a moment to remember our military friends who have given and continue to give so much. Upon occasion on t.v., I'll make a passing reference to my Dad, the legendary Navy A-6 pilot, Whitey. He earned a Silver Star in Vietnam for leading a rescue and recovery mission for a downed helicopter crew. Of course, tha... I totally cut somebody off in traffic the other day. I didn't mean to, but somehow as these things do, it just happened. The other guy was compeltely nice about it. I waved to him via my rear view mirror, and our lives went on. It was forgotten. But there are those other moments in life when rudeness creeps in, and you just can't shake it. I've had a couple of them recently. So there I was the weekend before last in Northern Virginia for my high school 30th reunion. Annandale High School, Class of '77, to be exact. It was a great time, to be sure. The best part about getting older is, of course, that you get to see how everything turned out. And that's especially true when it comes to high school. You get to see how everybody turned out. For me, my best friends in attendance were Bob the middle schoo... The funny thing is, when you meet them, they're all nice guys and gals. But if you have the misfortune of being subjected to their campaign commercials, you'd come away with an entirely different take on the candidates for the Virginia General Assembly. And it wouldn't be a good one. I'm not going to call out any specific names here, but they know who they are. The ads I'm referring to are the ones where the "Candidate... Hey now. I don't know that I ever actively sought to become a Dead-head, but it seems like that's what's happened. I returned from Charlottesville two weeks ago, where I saw Phil Lesh & Friends. Great show. Great time. When I got home I added that concert ticket to my collection of others from the past, and the total count of "Dead" shows surprised even me: Fifteen! Of those, a comparative few were a... |
