The General Lee, it wasn't

8:32 PM Mon, Sep 15, 2008 |

Your mother probably told you this, but it bears repeating: You can't believe everything you see on t.v. (or the movies).

It would seem that 38-year-old Michael Mills, Junior, never heard that lesson.

On September 10th, after allegedly trying to run away from Chesapeake Police and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service -- Mills tried to jump the Gilmerton Bridge in Chesapeake -- WHILE IT WAS LIFTED.

Compare it to the Dukes of Hazzard, The Blues Brothers or even Speed -- but this was one stunt that shouldn't have been attempted. Instead of pulling over for the officers trailing him-- Mills drove through two barrier arms before attempting to drive up the lifted Gilmerton Bridge and jump safely to the other side.

Without the assistance of Hollywood stunt teams, Mills getaway failed -- and he and his Nissan Maxima (Not the General Lee) landed nose down, under 25 feet of Elizabeth River water.

There's a lesson here. If it looked cool, yet dangerous on film -- it's probably too risky and too stupid to attempt in real life.

On a side note: In late July, I interviewed Allan Wyatt -- the guy who actually drove the General Lee on the Dukes of Hazzard for 7 years -- and those stunts he put the car through weren't fool proof. He had a list of injuries that would make an NFL offensive lineman cringe.

Until next time,
Andria Borba
