Was I really a pawn?

6:39 PM Fri, Mar 14, 2008 |

At the time, I felt terrible for them. Two women devastated by the death of one man: Thomas White. He was found shot to death last June in his home in Perquimans County. His daughter, Katherine Ann White, showed us inside the home where her father was killed. She explained she and her mother came home and discovered someone broke into the house, stealing money and jewelry.

We went outside and talked to Jennie Lee White, Thomas' widow. She was a wreck. We could barely understand her through her tears. She pleaded for anyone with information to call police right away. We left feeling absolutely terrible for these two women.

This week we learned investigators in Perquimans had made two arrests -- both the women we had interviewed. They told us they worked in concert to plot White's murder in order to collect life insurance money. The sheriff told me we were had. I just can't believe it. Usually I have a pretty good sense of when someone is lying, but I certainly didn't see anything suspicious with these two seemingly grieving ladies.

I'm told the women are maintaining their innocence. I'd love to talk to them again, this time from the Albemarle District Jail. But the jail supervisor says these women are no longer interested in talking to the press.

Seems to me that you shouldn't be so hard on yourself, that you just wanted to believe in humanity. Don't let it get you down, there are still good people out there. And, it is okay to be angry -- anybody would be.

My heart broke when I saw this story last summer too. I believed them, and as a native New Yorker, and retired NYC EMT, I don't believe everything I hear.

The GOOD news is, your interview will most likely be part of the trial! I just got off of jury duty for murder, and the defendant had given a jail house interview to TKR. We all got to watch it in court.

So if all the other evidence pans out, you MAY be an intrical part of a conviction. Then THEY will feel the way you do now! : >

I would like to think people are real but even I get questioned. I am too scared to try something stupid to cause gain. I usually end up helping that person that is trying to gain. Don't feel bad about it and please keep trying to find the good in humanity. There are still some of us out here.
