Reporting live from a plastic bubble...

3:56 PM Thu, Feb 28, 2008 |

Did you notice anything different about my live shot last night (Wednesday) from the Virginia Beach Jail? Well, if you were looking closely, you noticed I was shorter and sitting down.

13News producer Pearl Fyderek has accused me of using this blog to list my various injuries -- so in keeping with that tradition....

I'll spare you the gory (and painful) details, but I broke my big toe on Sunday. Not pleasant. The injury and le...

Kindness of Strangers

3:45 PM Thu, Feb 28, 2008 |

This is a blog I've been meaning to write for a while...

As a television reporter, I've developed somewhat of a thick skin. I'm used to doors being slammed in my face, having hideous names thrown in my direction and generally being the last person anyone wants to see.

So, when someone is kind to me out on assignment, to say the least, I'm a bit taken aback.

I've been blessed by the kindness of strangers a few times in...

A whole new way of Breaking News...

5:21 PM Tue, Feb 26, 2008 |

They always say it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I never thought I'd see the day when I became that old dog. I started in this business 14 years ago at the young age of 16. I was a teen news reporter in my hometown of New Orleans. Every station I've worked for, I've walked in, not just being the new reporter but the young one wanting to do liveshots all the time, and embracing all the newest trends in our business.

People watching

5:17 PM Mon, Feb 25, 2008 |

As an investigative reporter, I'm charged with uncovering exclusive stories for 13 News each day. I also live in and am assigned to cover Virginia Beach. I often start my day at the Virginia Beach Muncipal Center, going from various offices to check with sources, to visiting the courthouse to look at police documents.

Many times my day is a waiting game of waiting for the material I've uncovered to be confirmed and able t...

Who says you can't have a little fun?

4:54 PM Fri, Feb 22, 2008 |

Many of the stories we cover are quite serious, especially as an investigative reporter, just my mere presence makes some people shifty and nervous.

This week a woman came home to find me walking down her driveway -- my photographer taking pictures in her block. The woman's husband was robbed at gunpoint earlier in the week. She flipped out, was a little nervous, why were the news people bothering her?

That Meal isn't as Happy as it used to be....

4:40 PM Thu, Feb 21, 2008 |

Life on the job as a 13 News reporter often involves driving around in the big news van. I live and cover Virginia Beach for 13 News. I'm often working out of the news van -- it's my office on wheels.

Today, as we do many times I was working on multiple potential stories, driving around from place to place, trying to find the most informative and interesting story to tell you by 5pm. As is often the case, there is no time for th...

Media Scare Tatics To Get More Viewers

3:59 PM Wed, Feb 20, 2008 |

Tonight on 13 News I'm breaking a story regarding a man who's been peeping into windows and exposing himself to women in one neighborhood.

A few hours ago, my photographer and I were talking to people in the neighborhood, getting their thoughts on the fact that this was happening. It's also an opportunity to inform the people who live in the immediate area of what is happening in their neighborhood.

Most people we met thanked f...

"Why did you try to stop the fire with a bulldozer?"

10:12 PM Sat, Feb 09, 2008 |

Saturday evening, 13News photographer Beth Brown and I found ourselves headed from Norfolk to Hampton to cover a brush fire. We'd seen the live pictures shot by Roger Crawley and Sky13 on 13News at 6 -- they looked impressive. When we arrived to the corner of Harris Creek Road and Edinburgh, I was shocked to find out we couldn't go any farther. We were what seemed like miles away from the burning brush. The only action near our live van was th...

Unleashing My Inner Geek

9:14 PM Thu, Feb 07, 2008 |

Everyone has something they get geeky about. Some people have baseball statistics backed up in their head like some Bob Uecker clone. Others, can remember every specific detail of a fashion designer's collection -- from inspiration to trim. My inner geek gets unleashed over politics -- and primary season is like my World Cup -- it arrives every 4 years and I'm totally consumed.

Missing Out

5:27 PM Wed, Feb 06, 2008 |

I miss my brother. And I miss my dog Rigby. And I miss my friends back in Annandale. And I miss Maine. I miss my grandmothers Agnes and Ida and Dorothy (yep, I had three of them). And I miss my old General Assembly days and my Redskins days, but only a little.

But here's what I don't miss at all. I don't miss waking up with a pounding head and a lighter wallet. I'm talking of course about some of the poorer choices I made in youn...
