Now that it's 2008 many of us are looking forward to fresh starts. Yesterday I met a woman who was really excited to start the new year by moving in with her boyfriend. But her hopes for 2008 were ruined when a fire ripped through her apartment building, destroying everything she owns.
It was heartbreaking talking to her yesterday. She stood outside in the bitter cold only wearing her pajamas with fresh tears in her eyes and described how excited she was to move into her new place at Marina Shores Apartments that morning.
I know the feeling. Last December, my boyfriend and I got our first place together in Altoona, PA. It wasn't anything special, just a little one bedroom apartment at a little complex called Hollidaysburg Manor. But we were both so excited about it. I can still vividly remember how happy and giddy we both were as we unloaded the UHaul and set up all of our belongings in our first home together. I can't imagine what I would have done if our apartment had caught fire that night.
That's exactly what Becca Ankeny and her boyfriend are dealing with now. Flames tore through their apartment and destroyed everything they own last night. Everything. Phones, computers, photographs, sentimental keepsakes... everything. I honestly can't even imagine what it must be like.
And they weren't the only ones who lost precious belongings because of the fire. Tonight my thoughts and prayers are with those folks who now must start 2008 with next to nothing, and begin rebuilding their lives.
