It's a disturbing headline for an email, and one that quickly jumpstarts everyone in a newsroom... "Officer Shot." Unfortunately, we got that email at 8:59 last night.
Our producers and assignment editors quickly dispatched crews to the scene of the shooting in Chesapeake and to the hospital in Norfolk. Photographer Pierre Simmons and I went to the hospital. I arrived a couple of minutes after Pierre, just as the ambulance was pulling in. It was a sad sight to see the paramedics wheeling him in on a stretcher, trying desperately to save his life.
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, Detective Jarrod Shivers died from his injuries. It's truly a tragedy. A tragedy for his family and friends, the police department, and the whole community.
When I saw his photo on our newscast this afternoon and learned that he is survived by three children, my heart broke for the Shivers family. I know I speak for everyone here at 13News when I say, our thoughts and prayers are with them as they deal with this tremendous loss.
