I put the question mark there on purpose.. as in, is there a Morgellon's Disease or isn't there? Yesterday, the CDC announced it would launch a study of the mystery illness called Morgellon's Disease. People with Morgellon’s say they have fibers and other inorganic things growing out of their skin.
Some doctors say the condition, which can be debilitating, isn't really a distinct condition- it's a combination of many things like allergies and bug bites. Other doctors think its sufferers are anything from misguided to an need of a psychiatric evaluation. But sufferers with itchy crawling skin and evidence of mysterious fibers say their illness is anything but mysterious.
In some of the research I've read, one mother writes that her son began noticing small particles moving under his skin through his hands and fingers. The particles were forcing themselves through his skin on his nose, fingertips and all over his hands. He began to notice the particles in other parts of his body (chest, nose, ears). The pressure of these splinters was extremely painful. He put the strange fibers under a microscope, took pictures of them, took the photographs to a doctor, who refused to look at the pictures and told him he was totally loony.
He was in such pain, the young man committed suicide on the same day the parents later learned of the Morgellon's Research Foundation, an organization supporting research into the mystery illness- a group that lobbied CDC to have it the disease officially recognized.
I wonder whether Morgellon's Disease deserves a question mark. I'd like to help explain the mystery. I could do that with the help of someone who is willing to be an advocate for the disease and share their story with me.
