Typically, the WVEC newsroom is quiet on Saturdays and Sundays -- the only noise usually coming from the sports office as Brian Smith yells about some highlight (or lowlight). Today, however is not a typical Saturday - in fact - far from it.
Today, all newscasts on 13News go into 16 X 9 format. What does that mean? I'm not sure of the exact science behind it, but it means for our viewers watching in High Definition -- they'll no longer have those pesky black bars on either side of the video -- it will now stretch to fit the full screen. It will be sort of like the difference between watching a movie on DVD in widescreen or standard -- you'll get to see more of the action on the edges.
It's a big development, our first step toward moving into HD, something that will happen to all television stations nationwide in 2009.
When technological advances like this one happen - it's all hands on deck to make sure the launch is flawless. So in preparation for the big launch -- there are extra photographers, engineers, technical staffers busily working to make sure it all comes off clean.
In addition, to what's going on today -- all of the 13News photographer had to get special training to shoot in 16 X 9 -- instead of the standard 4 X 3.
