Ouch!

5:14 PM Thu, Dec 27, 2007 |

I've been accused by one WVEC producer of using my blog as a rundown of my on-the-job injuries. I can't say she's necessarily wrong -- if you need proof, take a look at some of earlier blog entries. But, today my clumsiness rose above and beyond the call of duty.

While preparing for 13News at Noon, I was trying to flatiron my Shirley Temple curly hair into submission. The temperature of the flat iron? 230 degrees. I was smoothing out my bangs, when I bumped that pesky flatiron against my forehead. I yelped while 13News photographer Charlie Hatfield and satellite truck operator Bryan Tulwits laughed. I was left with an inch long red mark smack in the middle of my forehead, requiring a ton of makeup to cover the burn.

Earlier in the day, I was walking around on the Hazelwood Bridge in my stilettos. On the way back to the truck, my feet were crying for relief. Charlie Hatfield came to the rescue, providing me with grey, velcro sneakers that he normally wears during hurricane coverage. Let me tell you, it was quite the fashionable look with my red, white and black dress.

Finally just before 13News at Five, I was running back to the sat truck to grab the microphone when I slammed my hand against a latch on the door -- raising a painful, red welt on my right hand.

I don't know if my equilibrium is off or if it's a full moon, but my grace certainly seems to have left the Old Dominion today.
