Thanksgiving Tragedy

7:01 PM Mon, Nov 26, 2007 |

On Thanksgiving weekend, most of us are sharing a nice meal with our families, doing a little bit of shopping, and just relaxing and having fun together. But unfortunately, this Thanksgiving weekend was deadly for a Norfolk family.

Around 10:30 Friday night, my producer, Andrew, came back to my desk to let me know there was breaking news and I needed to go to a shooting near Brambleton Ave. and Church St. My photographer, Pierre, and I rushed out to the scene and quickly discovered the shooting happened outside Enlanka Restaurant.

At that point, police were still busy investigating the crime scene and couldn't give us much information. I briefly spoke to the restaurant owner who told me he heard it was an attempted robbery, and that a customer had been shot. I knew the victim had life threatening injuries, but didn't know he died on the way to the hospital until the next day.

That's when I learned that the customer was a 15-year-old boy. I cringed as I listened to the story of the 8th grader being gunned down in front of his mom. It's truly tragic. Obviously any type of murder is sad, but the thought of a young man being killed before he's even old enough to get his license is heart-breaking.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family, as they struggle to cope with this senseless loss.
