Sweat and Tears

7:49 PM Mon, Nov 26, 2007 |

Normally, when I go to the gym I know I'm going to sweat. A lot. I'm not one of those people who work out and somehow manage to still look beautiful. I run, I sweat, and I get very red-faced. But I usually don't cry at the gym. Until today. Well, almost...

You see, I was watching The View to pass the time as I jogged on the treadmill. Today they had on two teenagers as their guests. The brother and sister started collecting cell phones and donations for troops back in 2004, and their fundraising efforts have blossomed over the years. They've collected thousands of cell phones and calling cards to make it easier for soldiers to get in touch with their families here at home. I'd heard bits and pieces of their story before, but never really paid attention until today.

I was definitely impressed. When my brother and I were teenagers we were more concerned with the latest gossip at school, what grade we got on our last test, or how our sports teams were doing. Like most teens, we were self-centered. But not these two teens. They were thinking about military families, and working hard to ease the burden they bear.

Today they got their reward for their hard work. AT&T gave them each a $100,000 scholarship for college. You should have seen the shock on their faces, and the look of surprise and joy on their parents' faces. Both of their parents are public school teachers, so I'm sure they're very thankful for the help with skyrocketing college tuition.

It was great to see a family get rewarded for their selflessness. So great, I teared up. I quickly blinked back the tears welling up in my eyes because I recently promised a friend I'd try harder not to be so emotional.

But these were happy tears. And sometimes happy tears are okay. Just not at the gym.
