How do you say it?

10:13 PM Fri, Nov 30, 2007 |

N-o-r-f-o-l-k. Seven little letters, seven thousand ways to say it. The pronunciation problem has plagued me since my move here. That was actually the first question I asked on my interview. Sitting around the breakfast table with my future colleagues, I got several different versions of Norfolk.

The most common answer was NOR- followed by a word that I can't type here and that would make the FCC blush. It's the one I've stuck to on-air until Thursday.

Around 5:30 p.m., I walked into a hair salon on 46th Street when the owner asked me to say the name of this fair city. In her eyes, my version was wrong. She told me she grew up in Norfolk and the city's name is pronounced just as it's spelled Nor-FOLK.

There are other 13News staffers, who also grew up in the greater Hampton Roads, who say it's Nah-fok.

So, my question for you...our loyal viewing and blog reading audience is...how do you say it? Is there a correct answer? Or is the name Norfolk open to interpretation?
