Digital Leashes

2:36 PM Fri, Nov 16, 2007 |

My full transition into the digital age has been an interesting one. Attending college in post-Clueless Southern California, my cell phone became as necessary as toothbrushes for my day to day life. When I got my first job in television, I gained a few more gadgets...in addition to my personal cell phone...I had a work cell and a pager. This past Christmas I added one more to my already overloaded bag, an iPod courtesy of Mom and Dad.

Since joining 13 News, I've joined the BlackBerry revolution. I've come to rely on my smartphone in more ways than I can count. During breaking news, I can look up phone numbers on online directories, e-mail facts and information to our producers and of course, make calls.

The only drawback to what photographer Andy Grossman calls my "Digital Boyfriend", is that it buzzes everytime I get an e-mail. It doesn't matter whether the e-mail comes in at 2:00 p.m. or 2:00 am, the little guy buzzes a warning. It shouldn't be a problem, but it is. I keep my buddy BlackBerry on top of my bed because to be perfectly frank, I'm blind without my glasses or contacts. And if it rings with an actual call in the middle of the night -- trying to walk across my bedroom to find it would be an adventure likely to land me in an emergency room.

So, what am I getting at?

While technological advances may be making my work life easier, it's murder on my REM time.
