Controversy doesn't end with Albert

5:32 PM Tue, Nov 20, 2007 |

This week begins with Alphonso Albert out of a job at Norfolk City Hall. He surely must feel like these past few weeks were more like years.

He went from directing Norfolk's new anti-crime office, reassigned to a volunteer management position, then resigning amid criticism that the city should've known about his lengthy criminal record from the '70s and '80s.

The story isn't over yet, much to the dismay of City Manager Regina Williams who said last week she wants the city to move beyond this saga. Some City Council members are upset with Williams and are speaking their minds. Next, look for some community leaders in Norfolk to speak against Williams, upset she did not perform a full background check on Albert.

Albert says the controversy took its toll on him and his family. I'll be watching to see where he lands after all of this. It's possible -- if not likely -- that he will return to his position directing Second Chances, a non-profit version of what he was going to do for the city. From what I hear it pays handsomely and it allows him to avoid the spotlight we in the news shine on public officials. I imagine he'll welcome that right about now.
