In a lot of ways since my move to Hampton Roads, I feel like a kid in school...experiencing everything for the first time. Friday, 13 News photographer Andy Grossman and I were headed to James City County to work on story about Christmas trees and the drought (and deer). During the long haul from our Norfolk studios, I was absolutely dumbfounded by the vibrant colors of foliage lining I-64.
As I've said many times before, I grew up in California. In the part of the state I grew up in, leaves have two colors: green and brown. No flame reds, blaze oranges or brilliant yellows -- just brown and green.
When I was a high school student, I studied some of the chemical and physical reasons leaves change colors. I didn't quite believe it, because from my personal and geographical frame of reference, leaves were only green and brown.
It was kind of cool to see that stuff I learned long ago, applied to real life. It's a relief to know the textbooks weren't lying.
