On Rocks and Relatives

9:03 PM Wed, Oct 17, 2007 |

The recent stories of people in Hampton Roads, particularly the elderly, being duped by a man offering to pour concrete driveways, but leaving loose gravel really bother me.

It's definitely a case of too-good-to-be-true. A man, promising a new driveway for a shockingly low price knocks on the doors of the elderly saying he's got extra concrete from a recently completed project and wants to help out. No contract, just cash.

These grandparents and widows fork over cash only to discover they aren't getting concrete, but chunks of rocks. By then, it's too late... the contractor has fled and these folks have an unwelcome mess to deal with.

I was appalled to hear these stories. What kind of person takes money from a grandparent on a fixed income?

The refrain I kept hearing when my photographer Pierre and I were working on this story was, "I could really use that money back".

If that was my grandmother, I'd be furious. I wonder how the person behind this string of incidents would feel if something like this happened to his grandmother. While I doubt that thought has ever entered his mind or, I wish it would.
