So often in this business, I feel as though I explore the negative and unfortunate elements of childhood -- drugs, guns and assaults. Friday however, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Myreon Pierce and introduce you to a teen who stood up in a time of crisis and pitched in.
What amazes me is the level and calm head this 16-year-old Isle of Wight teen has on his shoulders. While he was sitting in honors algebra at Smithfield High (preparing to take a test, no less) -- a car in the school's parking lot burst into flames.
Pierce is a volunteer firefighter with the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, has been for two years. After asking his principal for permission, he pulled on his fire gear, grabbed an extinguisher and managed to stop the flames from spreading while his classmates and teachers waited for the Smithfield Fire Department to arrive.
When I was interviewing Pierce, he said what he did was no big deal and that the best part of his day was the thank-you burger his prinicpal bought him.
Myreon, in my opinion, your bravery and calm control of a potentially dangerous situation deserve a lot more than a burger.
I would like to thank you for reminding me that there are teens who aren't causing trouble and who understand the meaning of service to community.
Hello. My name is Adrian Robinson. I am a Captain in the US Army and a VERY PROUD COUSIN of Myreon Pierce. I just wanted to say how so proud I am of him for doing such an outstanding job and selfless service to his community. Being deployed to Iraq for the past 12 months on a 15 month tour, it really lifts my spirits to hear positive things from home. It's icing on the cake when it's about family. Good job little cousin!

I too am an extremely proud cousin of Myreon! Wow!! There has been so much in the media lately about teens and guns and fighting and gangs that I was glad to see something positive. I was even happier to see that it was family! He (Myreon) has been very modest about this but I want to say GREAT JOB! We are extremely proud of you!

This is a story within a story, my Aunt is a single parent battling breast cancer raising a teenage boy, she has her good days and bad days, and it is truly a blessing to see my cousin on the news for an act such as this in a time where youth violence and vandalism has become prevalent in the black community. I thank you WVEC I know in spite of what my Aunt might be going through your coverage has given her a sense of well done in her efforts to raise a young man.
WOW !!! I am just soooo proud of that kid !! I am the mother of Myreon's girlfriend Erica. And my entire family is just sooo proud of him !! With the way so many young people are behaving these days, to see someone step in & take control like that & save so much !! He is just soooo amazing !! For Myreon's mom to go through all she is going through & raise such an awesome young man !! She deserves to be extremely proud of herself & of course him !! Congratulations to Myreon & his entire family !!
