I'll admit I have a sweet tooth. A big one. One of my earliest memories is helping my grandmother make white-fudge for Christmas. Now that I'm a "grown-up", I can't indulge my craving for sugar. Except on Halloween. ...I've always had a competitive streak. It started when I was a small child, blossomed through my teenage years, and sticks with me now that I'm an adult. ...Usually it looks like you've stumbled upon a Hollywood set. Victims covered in blood and guts, lying on stretchers with emergency workers swarming around them. Of course these are always emergency drills, never the real thing. Police, fire and the military hold these practice sessions frequently -- for when the big emergency hits.
For some reason I love visiting elementary schools. Maybe it's because my mom's a first grade teacher and I grew up helping her decorate her classroom, watching her school plays, and occassionally speaking to her students. ...The video coming into the WVEC newsroom from the fires in Southern California has been nothing short of spectacular. You've seen it too; the towering columns of smoke, homes turning to ash, and hillsides ablaze in a sea of red and orange. It's not easy to shoot video like that. It's a testament to how hard working (and often foolhardy) the photographers and reporters on the ground are. ...Your wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. And thanks to her mother, a friend of mine's wedding day was. She got married a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to be there to watch her say her vows, cut the cake, and dance around with her crazy friends and family at the reception. ...Hey now. I don't know that I ever actively sought to become a Dead-head, but it seems like that's what's happened. I returned from Charlottesville two weeks ago, where I saw Phil Lesh & Friends. Great show. Great time. When I got home I added that concert ticket to my collection of others from the past, and the total count of "Dead" shows surprised even me: Fifteen! Of those, a comparative few were a... I love shoes. I own more pairs of candy-colored, strappy, peep-toed and sky-high pumps and sandals than I can wear in a month. But, this blog is not about those shoes. It's about my hunt for work-appropriate footwear. ...
For the better part of my nearly half-century-old life, I've been pulling for the mighty Redskins. I'll continue to do so, of course, but I'm just a little bit worried about what I've been seeing lately. ...I received a few phone calls and e-mails this week asking about the scruffy face I'm sporting this week and the bandaged up hand that snuck into a few shots of my stories the past few days. No, it's not a new look, or an early Halloween costume. ...
Joe's Job is creating one of these blog entries. Between Daybreak live shots and all those great restaurants I am VERY busy! More updates coming.... ...Soon I will blog about covering Hampton Roads for 13 News. ...Will anyplace, anywhere ever agree to be home to the Navy's outlying jet training field? Tonight, some 500 citizens from Northeastern North Carolina are expected to attend an informational meeting about the O.L.F. at Elizabeth City State University. ...The recent stories of people in Hampton Roads, particularly the elderly, being duped by a man offering to pour concrete driveways, but leaving loose gravel really bother me. ...So often in this business, I feel as though I explore the negative and unfortunate elements of childhood -- drugs, guns and assaults. Friday however, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Myreon Pierce and introduce you to a teen who stood up in a time of crisis and pitched in. ... |
