Artic Ice may hit record low

7:51 AM Fri, Aug 17, 2007 |

Researchers at the University of Colorado believe there is a 92% chance that the Artic Sea Ice will melt to a record low by September. Originally, they thought the chances of hitting the record melt was 33% but they modified the prediction after seeing a rapid reduction of sea ice in July.

Researchers have been measuring the sea ice with satellites since the 1970s. Higher levels of artic ice melt could impact weather patterns over the northern hemisphere - both rainfall and temperatures.

Annually there is a minimum of artic ice in September and a maximum in March.

For more information on CU-Boulder's Arctic Regional Ice Forecasting System group, see the Web site at: http://ccar.colorado.edu/arifs.

Keep an eye on this story and the varying amounts of arctic ice in the seasons to come!
