The Classic Debate

8:34 PM Tue, Jan 27, 2009 |

A classic debate is brewing in Washington these days is over President Obama's
800-billion dollar stimulus package and whether it should be weighted more heavily toward spending, or tax cuts.

The GOP favors tax cuts while democrats lean toward spending. That's long been the
classic debate!

Tonight on World News with Charles Gibson, reporter Betsy Stark put the issue in fairly simple terms. A little Stimulus Package 101, if you will.

President Obama's argument is every dollar in 'spending' creates $1.50 worth of stimulus while every dollar of 'tax cuts' creates just .75 cents of stimulus. That's what many economist also think.

Mr. Obama wants to stimulate 'employment' in key sectors; energy, infrastructure and health care. The thought is jobs produce income and more spending. The other question is what would people do with a tax cut? Spend it? Save it? Try and breath new life into their 401k?

The stimulus package heads to the U.S. House tomorrow where debate will begin. It will no doubt be spirited and a real test of whether the tone in Washington has really changed. A lot of people across the country who are really hurting will be watching.
