After most newscasts we record promotional spots that run throughout the evening, usually during prime time. These promos last a matter of seconds and are designed to tease upcoming news coverage. Occasionally though, the promos are live.
Live or Memorex, the same rule applies. Anchors should treat every word spoken from the set as not only a live broadcast, but a live event being watched by your mom, pastor, and first grade teacher.
Veteran WNBC-TV anchor Sue Simmons on May 12, 2008 during a LIVE tease blurted out the F-word. She was reading a story about grocery prices, when the video switched to footage of a cruise ship. Apparently upset about the mistake, Simmons then said, "What the #@*& are you doing?" I suspect she thought this was a TAPED promo.
Minutes later, Simmons issued an apology to the NYC audience.
This stuff doesn't go away in the age of Youtube.com and similar viral video platforms.
On the same day of the Simmons slip, media organizations were having a field day running footage of Bill O'Reilly going ballistic on the set of Inside Edition. This video was so old; O'Reilly had a full head of hair.
Once again, this stuff doesn't go away.
