I hope you'll tune in Thursday for 13-News at six and eleven for a special report I just bet will save you some money. And that's not just one of those lines to try and get you to watch. 13-News Investigators recently found a number of local stores--major retail stores and grocery stores, charging 5% state sales tax on items the Department of Taxation says should be tax free. They're items many of us buy all the time. . And when the stores get it wrong, you pay! So, we decided to investigate for you because we know in this tough economy and every penny counts. Just today on 13-News we told you the story of people pawning their possessions to come up with enough gas money to get to work. And recently we talked with people concerned about what a 15-cent increase in school lunch prices might mean to the family budget. I'll tell you which items on your family shopping list you may be paying tax on and shouldn't be. We'l tell you what the stores have to say and have the Department of Taxation's take from Richmond. As the store trainer while working Zayre and Ames Department store in Norfolk (closed in 1993), I followed company guidelines that were sent from the company homeoffice to train employees properly. Once such guideline was the items that were non-tax in the state of Virginia. I remember the following that were non-taxable in the state of Virginia: Photo processing (labor on film developing), newspapers, magazines, vegetable seeds, and battery core deposits. Of the listed, the only one that I know I have not paid tax on is the battery core deposit. Everyone else charges taxes on the items that I listed and when I speak to others in regards to the non-tax items, they tell me they had no idea about this. I know there are other items that I did not list and I was wondering when someone would catch wind of this!
