A little help with technology

8:42 PM Wed, Apr 16, 2008 |

I was at the store the other day and like most people when I go I'm trying to run in and get out as fast as I can. Grabbing the items I need fairly quickly is not a problem. You just have to stay focused and not be side tracked by items that you don't need, but look good. This philosophy works best when you shop on a full stomach.
But to me the most difficult part about getting out of a store quickly is picking the right check out line. I never seem to pick the right one. It seems every time I get in a line the person in front of me has some issue that requires a manager being called. It never fails. So i've gotten wise. Now whenever possible I check my self out. That's right I'm one of those people who loves the self-check out line. In fact some, like my husband, might say I'm pretty good at it.
My knowledge came into play just a few days ago. I spotted a short self-checkout line.
Only one man ahead of me and he only had three items, perfect. But as soon as I got in line I realize the man was waving at a sales person for help. That's when I asked if he wanted me to get someone for him. He said "that would be great because I don't know how this works. I hate using them because I feel like I'm taking someone's job from them."
I quickly offered my assistance showing him how and where to scan the bar code so the computer reads it. Plus where to insert his money and pick up his change. He was so thankful. But to me it was just the neighborly thing to do. I mean after all I helped him get checked out faster so then I could get checked out faster.
But I have to tell you he really made me think. I mean am I really taking a job away from someone else because I check out my own groceries ? Or am I helping to lighten the load of all the cashiers on staff by taking a customer out of their line?
I'm curious to hear your response to this.. tell me what you think.

I don't look at it as taking a job away. I look at it as helping out everyone in this fast paced world. They didn't take a job, because, if you notice, they usually only have 3 checkers on at a time...which is still the case with the self checkers in place. These "self" lines help to shorten the "staffed" lines. I use the "self" lines anytime they are available. I love it because I am in control of how much I spend at that check out counter!
