What did we do before electricity?

8:42 PM Fri, Mar 07, 2008 |

I know it's not something we think about much these days. Most of us pretty much take for granted that the lights will go on when we flip the switch so will the television when we hit the remote. Then we have nights like last Tuesday. Remember that storm ? Well my family was one of the thousands of homes without electricity.
I admit if you're going to lose electricity I've always thought nighttime was the best time for it to happen. That is until i had my son. I didn't realize how dependent I had become on our audio and video monitor of the baby. They sit right next to the bed so at the first sound of crying I can look and see if it's a bad dream or if he needs me to come and find his pacifier for him.
But without electricity nothing worked... not even the night lights that usually guide my trip to the nursery. It was a little weird and scary. I jumped at every little sound to run check on him. Needless to say I didn't get much sleep that night. But I sure did gain a newfound appreciation for electricity.
