A tragedy in North Carolina

7:47 PM Fri, Feb 22, 2008 |

When you've read the news for as many years as I have sometimes it seems like nothing surprises you. But that's not true. On Thursday there was a tragic accident in North Carolina that claimed the lives of a mother, her two sons and the father of one of the boys. Amazingly her three year old daughter survived the horrific accident.
As the video from Sky 13 came into the newsroom you could hear the gasps from just about everyone who saw it. From the look of the demolished car no one thought anyone could survive. In fact we were told at one point that everyone in the car had died. But then amazingly hours later it was discovered there was a mix-up at the hospital and little 3-year old Zaniyah Burke was in fact alive.
People often ask me how can you read stories about death and destruction everyday and not be affected? The answer is you can't. The only thing you can do is just keep it in perspective and remember that a lot of good things happen too. That's what yesterday's tragic accident made me think about... that out of this horrible accident a young girl survived. She's still in critical condition and has a long road ahead of her. But many people are calling it a miracle that she's still alive.
For me it's a story I'll never forget and I look forward to hearing more about her amazing recovery.
