A Nervous and Proud Dad!

6:46 PM Mon, Feb 25, 2008 |

I think many parents would agree it's exciting, and a bit nerve racking, to watch your kids take some of the same steps you've walked in life whether it's baseball, dance, music or art.

This morning my daughter, Mia, took over as an anchor of the morning announcements at her elementary school and I was more than a little nervous.

I made it clear I would not lean over her shoulder and give her any advice she did not ask me for.

In fact,I suggested I not be at the school on the first day she anchored the news to give her some time to get comfortable with it and have fun with it.

To my surprise, my daughter was disappointed to hear I didn't feel it best to be there on her first day.

She insisted I be there and that I be in the library just a few feet from the tiny room/studio where she and the rest of the crew worked on the show.

All of a sudden, I heard someone yell out, "Stand by."

On a tv in the school library my daughter popped up, her voice coming through loud and clear. No apparent nerves(on her part, anyway). What a thrill!

My wife and I are not pushy parents. We want our daughter to experience those things that interest her. We do not live our lives vicariously through her by encouraging
her to take the 'stage' and do those types of things to which we may have aspired.

But this morning, there she was on tv anchoring the school news. Even if it was just the SOL question of the day, some science trivia and introducing a moment of silence, her
dear old dad was proud.Very proud!

The network--if only for a day!
