Celebrating a wonderful marriage...

6:12 PM Tue, Jan 15, 2008 |

This Friday is a special day for my family. My brother, sisters and I are getting together to celebrate with my mother. But one key person will be missing... my father. He passed away two years ago.

But Friday would have been my parents 50th anniversary. To someone like myself, who's only been married three and a half years, fifty years seems like a lifetime. But to my mother her wedding day seems like just yesterday. When in reality it was five children and eleven grandchildren ago.
I know anniversarys are usually a celebration for the couple involved. But for my family January 18, 1958 is a celebration for all of us. A chance to reflect on what a wonderful marriage my parents had and more importantly what a wonderful example they have given all of us. So on Friday when we all get together to celebrate Dad may not be there in person but he will certainly be there in spirit. And the memories he and my mother have given us as a family are definitely worth celebrating.

My mother passed away 1 month after my parents 34th anniversary. For the 2 remaining years my dad was alive, I sent him a "Special Day" card on what had been their anniversary. My dad was also dying of cancer during those 2 remaining years, but we never discussed the fact my mother was actually dead on their anniversary. We still celebrated a union that was so important to us. "til death do us part" didn't apply when it came to my parents, my dad went to join my mom 2 years, 3 months, and 13 days later.
