One of the fun things about my job is getting invited to speak to kids around Hampton Roads. I did just that yesterday at Mack Benn, Jr. Elementary in Suffolk. It was a lot of fun.
It was Career Day at the school and professionals in so many fields converged on the school. Gosh, could I be as interesting as the firefigher who brought the big red fire engine? Turns out, the second and third graders I spoke to were delightful, attentive and appreciative that I took time out to come and speak to them. When I asked Miss Smith's third graders what they wanted to be when they grow up, I got an earful. They seem to have a tremendous love for animals. Three want to be veterinarians and one wanted to be a horse trainer. The rest of the list included, football and basketball players, doctors, and astronauts. What!!!!? No Journalists????
In Miss Beiderman's class, the second graders were extremely excited--shouting out one question after another. "Are you Jennifer Lopez?," one kid screamed out. Little Randolph said, "Are you model?" I like him. We had a good time. I even got the kids to do mock live shots as pretend reporters. The next time someone asks them what they want to be when they grow up, I'd bet journalist will be added to the list.
