Just in time for the holidays, a disturbing story out of Washington, DC today about air travel.
How about 19 U.S. airports!
There's nothing all that sophisticated here. Investigators picked-up the bomb parts at local stores and on the internet for about $150.
By a number of accounts, the U.S.has spent some 20-billion dollars since 9-11 trying to make air travel safer. What have we gotten for our money?
We have gotten a lot of new technology since 9-11. There are whole body scanners, advanced technology X-rays, bottled liquid scanners, and a number of other things.
But when investigators can make their way through 19 airport security checkpoints smuggling bomb-making components, it's troubling.
This summer the lines were long at the security checkpoint as my family flew home from a vacation in Colorado. I could not help but notice the man in front of me fussing over having to give up something he had packed deep inside his backpack. It was a half-used jar of mayonaise. Yes, mayonaise!
I remember thiniking if we're down to confiscating mayonaise, we must have this security thing well under control.
Perhaps not!
