it's often said that it's human nature for us to take things for granted.
i realized this while covering the story of the ship that ran aground in virginia beach today. in order for us to get that breaking news on the air to you quickly and accurately, it takes the work of our entire news team - people i am around every single day, but sometimes -- take for granted. you know how it is -- you tend to take for granted how talented people are who you're around all the time. you see us anchors on the air, or you see our team of reporters live at the scene. but what you do not see are the folks at our assignment desk - frantically working the phones to gather information we desperately need -- trying to figure out what's going on and where it's going on and then making decisions on where to dispatch our crews and figuring out what angle of the story they will cover. you don't see the newscast producers - in my case - lily nguyen on 13news at noon - constantly talking in my ear while i am reporting information to you live on the air - guiding me and letting me know what part of the story is coming up next...or when a tape is not ready or when a technical problem behind the scenes causes us to scramble right there on the spot (and if you don't notice at home - then we're doing our jobs right). you often do not get a chance to hear sky13 pilot rodger crawley report on the air but when he does - i know i can keep firing questions at him and he will be reliable every single time - giving you more perspective at home which is unmatched. to me -rodger is one of our unsung heroes. and speaking of our heroes - i recently had the opportunity to see the coast guard in action --you'll see what i am talking about in a very special report that we are airing in honor of military appreciation monday this monday on 13news daybreak at 6am and then monday night on 13news at 11. so - just to wrap up my thoughts here - the next time you watch the news, don't just think about the people you see on your screens, think about our support network behind the scenes - people like our peers on the assignment desk, our producers like lily, and our pilots like rodger. and never - ever forget about the bravery and skills of the men and women of our military. in this case - the united states coast guard. their work and what they do is so valuable -- just ask those people on the ship that ran aground. they are people we should never take for granted - not for a single second.
