a "crafty" veteran: thoughts waking up on veteran's day

7:51 AM Sun, Nov 11, 2007 |

still has that patritoic spirit

every year we often get the same groups of people coming on 13news at noon or other shows to be interviewed to let people know about their special events coming up. well, every year at this time, we often have veterans and some good folks at golden corral come in to talk about military appreciation monday -- which is tomorrow -- following this very special day (i'm writing this on sunday morning) -- veteran's day sunday. every year, i get to be reacquainted with men like charles craft. whenever he comes in for an interview, i sometimes forget i am conducting an actual interview because i get caught up in learning from him - his stories about fighting for our country...his stories about the past. and every year, i see a twinkle and a tear in his eyes as he thinks back to his buddies --buddies who are still with him and --unfortunately -- buddies who have passed or who were killed in action. tomorrow, wvec/13news salutes our active duty personnel and veterans with military appreciation monday. those special men and women get a free buffet dinner from 5-9pm and many of us from wvec will be at area golden corrals to raise money for the disabled americans veterans - a cause that mr. craft fights hard for today. i think i will be at the independence boulevard golden corral in vabeach so come on over and say hi and drop a small donation if you could in the d.a.v. jar that we'll have on the table. that's tomorrow. veteran's day is actually today. and as i wake up, i think of men like mr. craft - who have fought hard for our country in the past and who continues to look after his peers today......and i think about my football watching buddy reggie who will be returning to iraq for the third time in just 2 short months from now. to all of you in uniform or who have worn it in the past - thank you for your service to our country and for protecting our way of life. i hope to see many of you tomorrow night at golden corral -- it's our visible way of saying your efforts are not -- and have not --- been forgotten.
