At that point, I didn't bother to turn around since it was apparent a motorcyclist driving at a high rate of speed was also traveling east. This happens quite often as I am driving home at night, one or two young men on so-called crotch rockets speeding along the interstate. Something was different this time.

It was apparent to me the motorcyclist was traveling faster than 100 miles per hour and it would be a miracle if he made it home in one piece. Seconds later, two unmarked police cars appeared in my rear view mirror, as they were in hot pursuit but without flashing lights.

At that point, the motorcyclist turned slightly to see how closely the officers were following. The officers were driving very fast also, but they were still a quarter of a mile behind the motorcyclist. At 12:01am, I placed a call to the newsroom to make the desk aware that a high speed chase was underway. I normally take the Rosemont Road exit, but I continued to First Colonial to see if the chase continued east. It did not.

I exited the interstate and went home, wondering what happened.

By the time I settled down and continued my ride home, I realized it was now October 23rd, the birth date of my first daughter. Renee is now 20 years old; where did the time go? It is also the date the young motorcyclist lost his life.

Seconds after seeing him turn his head to spot officers in hot pursuit; the motorcyclist exited the interstate on Rosemont Road where he continued to the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway. The 23 year old former soldier was killed instantly when he crashed into a car. I am left with an unsettling feeling, knowing that I saw this young man only minutes before his death.
