The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) National meeting is happening in Indianapolis right now. ACSM is the largest, most respected sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. The American College of Sports Medicine promotes and integrates scientific research, education, and applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance performance, fitness, health, and quality of life. A report just published from the meeting showed that yoga and resistance training combined in a fitness regimen had positive effects on anxiety and other mood characteristics. Here is the summary of benefits of resistance training: longer-lasting, more robust effects post-activity, including positive changes in mood states, anxiety, tension, calmness, energy, and tiredness. The effects of yoga were most pronounced in anxiety reduction and calmness. Researchers believe the potential mental health and physiological benefits make these activities a unique combination for both improved physical health and mental wellness. Consider incorporating these activities into your workout routine or weekly schedule. If you're not sure you'd enjoy either one, you can rent exercise videos and DVD's from your local video rental store or library. What a great way to try before you buy! And remember, for resistance training you do not need to lift weights to get an effective strength training workout. Bodyweight movements such as lunges, push-ups (these can be modified with knees on the floor or standing facing the wall), and squats are great exercises that require no equipment. |
